The impact of a new Covid vaccine will be seen over the summer and life is expected to return to normal by next winter, said one of its creators.
Professor Ugur Sahin, co-founder of BioNTech, said this winter will still be difficult as the vaccine will not have a major impact on the number of infections.
In an interview on the BBC's Andrea Marr Show, Sahin said he was convinced the vaccine would reduce transmission between people, as well as stop the development of symptoms in someone who has been vaccinated.
"It is possible that the vaccine could halve the transmission, which would have a major impact. "I am very confident that human transmission will be reduced by such an effective vaccine, maybe not 90%, but maybe 50%, but we must not forget that this too can result in a dramatic reduction in the spread of the pandemic." he said.
After the announcement of the world’s first effective vaccine, John Bell, a professor of medicine at Oxford University, suggested that life could return to normal by spring.
"I'm probably the first person to say that, but I'll say it with some confidence," he said.
However, Professor Sahin said it would take more time:
"If all goes well, the vaccine will start being distributed later this year, early next year."
