Italy towards rejecting Trump's Peace Council / Corriere della Sera: The

Italy is not expected to respond positively to the invitation of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to join the so-called "Peace Board". According to the newspaper Corriere della Sera, the main reason is related to the constitutional restrictions that prevent Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni from making such a commitment on behalf of the Italian state.

At the heart of the issue is Article 11 of the Italian Constitution, which stipulates that Italy may participate in international organizations aimed at peace and security, but only “on conditions of equality with other states.” According to Corriere della Sera, this principle is incompatible with the structure and functioning of the Peace Board, as proposed.

Although Meloni is expected to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, Italian media reports that she is increasingly aware that she cannot sign on behalf of Italy for admission to this board, despite the estimated cost of membership.

An additional obstacle relates to institutional procedures. Ratification of any international agreement or treaty requires approval by Parliament through an ordinary law, a process that, according to the cited sources, cannot be accomplished within the available timeframes.

According to Corriere della Sera, this issue was discussed during a recent meeting held by the prime minister with deputy prime ministers Matteo Salvini and Antonio Tajani, as well as with Defense Minister Guido Crosetto.
