
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, 1,830 cases of Ebola virus have been laboratory-confirmed, while the epidemic, declared on May 15, has claimed the lives of 648 people. The data is disclosed in a report published by the country's authorities.
This is the 17th Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo and is caused by the Bundibugyo variant, for which there is still no vaccine or treatment.
Ebola, a virus that causes hemorrhagic fever, has killed more than 15,000 people in Africa over the past 50 years. The deadliest outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo occurred in 2018–2020, with about 2,300 deaths out of nearly 3,500 confirmed cases.
