President Donald Trump said a suspect has been arrested after shots were heard near the White House Correspondents' Association dinner in Washington, DC, adding that federal authorities are investigating his California residence.
"The person has been arrested. They're going to his apartment. I think he lives in California, and he's a sick person, very sick, and we don't want things like that to happen," Trump said after being escorted off stage during the incident.
Speaking from the White House and surrounded by members of his cabinet, the president described the suspect's actions before the shooting.
"A person attacked a security checkpoint armed with multiple weapons and was neutralized by some very brave members of the Secret Service," Trump said.
The suspect studied engineering and is a graduate of the California Institute of Technology, known as Caltech, according to materials obtained by CNN.
According to the latest information from authorities, the suspect in the attack is a 31-year-old from California, according to several law enforcement officials briefed on the investigation.
