A couple, a German and an American, have been sentenced to three years in prison in Spain after keeping their three minor children isolated for nearly four years, out of fear of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The serious incident was discovered in the city of Oviedo, where authorities found children living in poor hygienic conditions and with serious physical and psychological problems.
According to British media, the parents, Christian and Melissa Steffen, had locked their children inside the house from December 2021 to April 2025, claiming they wanted to protect them from the virus.
When police entered the apartment, they found filthy surroundings, garbage and animal feces throughout the house. Investigators said the children had health problems, psychological difficulties and obvious signs of neglect after years of isolation.
According to prosecutors, the long isolation has caused serious consequences for their physical and emotional development. Disturbing drawings of monsters and frightening symbols were also found in the children's rooms, which according to authorities indicate their serious mental state.
