Trump: My attacker was inspired by the 'No Kings' movement, but I am

US President Donald Trump has reacted after the shooting incident near the Washington Hilton Hotel, blaming the political climate and the protests against it.

"The man who attacked me was inspired by the 'No Kings' movement, but I am not a king," Trump declared, linking the incident to anti-government demonstrations.

Just hours after calling for unity, Trump returned to his harsh tone toward the media and the opposition. In an interview with CBS News, he said that during the moment of danger, he had not felt fear.

"I know how life works, we live in a crazy world. Melania? She's intelligent, she immediately understood what was happening and jumped to the ground, even though she was scared," he said.

The interview took a tense turn when journalist Norah O'Donnell read a portion of the attacker's manifesto, which mentioned serious accusations that seemed to refer to the president.

Trump reacted immediately, categorically denying any accusations and attacking the journalist: "I am neither a rapist nor a pedophile. You are a terrible person reading these words. You should be ashamed of yourself," he told her.

The US president linked political responsibility for the attack to the "No Kings" protests, accusing his opponents of fueling a dangerous climate in the country.
