Emmy night brought a historic moment: British actor Owen Cooper, just 15 years old, was announced as the winner of the “Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries” award for his role in the successful production “Adolescence.” He thus became the youngest actor to ever win this prestigious award.
Cooper played a student accused of murdering his classmate, a role that earned him not only applause from the jury, but also from the audience. The four-hour miniseries itself didn't stop there: in addition to the award for new actor, it also won for "Best Miniseries", and was praised for its direction, screenplay and excellent performances by Stephen Graham and Erin Doherty.
Excited on stage, Cooper said: "Being here is just surreal. When I started acting classes, I never thought I would ever be in the United States, let alone on this stage. Tonight I realized that if you listen, focus and step out of your comfort zone, you can achieve anything. Whoever you are."
With this win, he broke the record held since 1973 by Scott Jacoby, who was 16 years old when he won an Emmy for “That Certain Summer.” However, the youngest person to ever win an Emmy remains Roxana Zahl, who won the award at age 14 for “Something About Amelia” in 1984.
"Adolescence" has received numerous accolades for the way it deals with the impact of smartphones and social networks on teenagers, making it one of the most commented productions of the year.
