The protests of the last four weeks that have been taking place against the government and Prime Minister Rama have entered a new phase.
The protesters' Coordination Group has sent a letter to the ambassadors and heads of missions of Western countries in Albania, informing them about the political situation and their demands.
The protesters' five main demands
The Coordination Group has presented five main demands, which it considers to be an expression of the will of the protesters:
First, the resignation of the Prime Minister and the current government is required, as a necessary step for political change.
Secondly, it is proposed to create a transitional, non-partisan technical government with a 12-month mandate to guarantee a new reform process.
Third, a deep constitutional reform is required that would be approved through a referendum, including changes to the Electoral Code, rules for financing political parties, and limiting the prime minister's terms to a maximum of two.
Fourth, changes are required to several laws, including the repeal of the law on protected areas, the law on cultural heritage, the package known as the "Mountains Package", and the framework for strategic investments.
Fifth, it is proposed to draft a new social contract between citizens and the state, through consultations with independent experts and civil society.
At the end of the letter, the Coordination Group calls on the ambassadors to consider the seriousness of the protest and support a peaceful, democratic and inclusive solution to the political situation in the country. “We remain at your disposal for any further communication,” the letter states.
