Finland's newly elected parliament voted today to appoint Petteri Orpo, head of the National Coalition Party (NCP), as prime minister.
In this way, the way is opened for a right-wing government and the rule of the social democrat Sanna Marin ends.
Orpo will lead a coalition of the conservative NCP, the Finnish Nationalist Party, the minority Swedish People's Party and the Christian Democrats, who together won a majority of parliamentary seats in the April 2 election.
Describing himself as a fiscal conservative, Orpo based his election campaign on a promise to reduce the government's budget deficit by cutting spending as well as cutting taxes, while seeking to boost job creation in the private sector.
